Parvana is truthful, brave and caring.
This is because she never lied to her parents. She was always truthful and honest. When her mother had asked where she had been she couldn’t lie to her, she had to tell her that she had gone with Shauzia to dig bones. This shows that Parvana is very truthful and is a very honest person.
She was brave to go outside (when girls weren’t allowed), cut her long hair (that she had adored), and dress like a boy, all of this to become a breadwinner for the family (since the father was in jail. This shows that Parvana is very brave to do things that she doesn’t like. She dressed like a guy to make a living for her family and sell things in the marketplace.
Parvana is a very caring person. She always looked after her younger siblings and always assisted them in whatever they needed assistance in. When her family had left for he older sisters wedding, she was left alone at home to work. When she found out that the Taliban had taken over the place her family had went. As soon as she heard this she left whatever she was doing and went to Mazar-e-Sharif (where the rest of the family went) to see If her famiy was safe. This shows that she is a very caring person.
Sentence about the Character: Parvana is living in Afghanistan, where war is taking place. What she is trying to do, is to make sure her family survives and everyone is safe.
Action/ Involvement: She is the protagonist of the story, she changes her identity to become the breadwinner for her family.
Shauzia is a friend that Parvana meets during her journey through life. She meets her during the middle of the story and they spend a lot of moments together. Throughout the story they become best friends and plan to meet again in 20 years, in a place Parvana has always wanted to see. Shauzia is a very strong character (emotionally), brave and loving/caring. Shes alway trying to help no matter what and always in a optimistic mood. Shauzia and Parvana create a unique bond because they both understand each other. When they first meet (after school was shut down for girls), they noticed that they were both disguised as boys to keep there identity a secret. This was somethings both of them related on. Together they faced hardships and the difficulties of working in the market together.
Sentence about the Character: She is Parvana's old classmate from when they were allowed to go to school.
Action/ Involvement: She soon becomes the best friend of the protagonist. Her and Parvana spend a lot of time together working, both having there real identities a secret.
Fatana is Parvana's mother. A very caring, loving and kind hearted women. She is also very smart and loves writing. She went to university and believes that everyone no matter what sex should be able to have education. Fatana cares about her family a lot, and when her husband got taken away, she went into depression. Although he was in jail for quite some time, she pulled through and tried to be strong and believed that he would come back.
Sentence about the Character: Fatana is Parvana's mother, a very loving and caring mother, who had tragically lost her husband because he was sent to jail.
Action/ Involvement: She also helps the protagonist in a good way, with her help Parvana was able to change her identity, and be able to support the family.
Mrs. Weera was Parvana's gym teacher in the school she used to go to. When Parvana's father go taken away she was the one who stayed with them and helped them in whatever they needed help in (especially her mother). She is very helpful, compassionate, and a thoughtful person. Throughout the story she creates a special friendship bond with Parvana.
Sentence about the Character: Mrs. Weera was the gym teacher at Parvana's old school, who them became her very close family friend.
Action/ Involvement: When Parvana's mother Fatana, goes to Mazar-e-Sharif with the rest of the family, she stays behind to look after Parvana since she still went to the marketplace to work.
